I just returned from the Grey Art Gallery, Icons of the Desert: Early Aboriginal Paintings from Papunya. I was mesmerized and dazzled at discovering something so new to me . . . I have no words! Check out the site for the virtual exhibit!
Children's Water Dreaming (Version 2), Shorty Lungkarta Tjungurrayi (Pintupi, 1920-1987)
"This delicate composition is the first of several works by Shorty Lungkarta that appear to be linked to the unusually wet winter of mid-1972. The painting most likely depicts Shorty's birthplace of Lapintjanya, near Lake Macdonald west of Papunya, with the central roundel indicating Lampintjanya's waterhole, a claypan, and the overlapping whorls -- as fine as cobwebs -- depicting water running in the creek. . . "
" . . . this is a common way of disguising in public the presence of a sacred object by presenting its more mundane derivative." -- Fred Myers
