The Aerodynamics of the Hovering Hummingbird cinema program is quickly approaching (April 29!) and I'd like to celebrate science now, beginning with the fantastic webzine, Science & The City! S&C is collaborating with us, and especially since today is Earth Day, please check out this site for scientific events happening all week in honor of our planet!
I never could have predicted that as a microbiology student and desperate laboratory researcher that I would one day be an experimental film/video artist who was interested in the poetry of scientific imagery & language. As a student I thought that using the light microscope was quite marvelous, and I had the opportunity to take a rad course in electron microscopy. But following graduation, I worked at the bench in a real microbiology laboratory, and after this experience it took a long time for me to realize that science could be mesmerizing and elegant. Maybe because I found this work so challenging, I have much admiration for scientists. Even the most talented researchers must have great reservoirs of patience & perseverance! My two favorites are my sister, Laura, a chemical engineer, and my friend, Denise, a Postdoc in genetics, and I have met so many other great scientists along the way. Even as I was running away from science, from city to city, I guess I have arrived at the beginning . . .
So let's give it up for all the physicists, the cosmologists, the chemists, the geneticists, the biologists, the engineers, the geologists, the mathematicians, the microbiologists . . . and don't forget the experimental film/video artists! In our own unique way, we are part of science too . . .
