When I initially read about the Beastie Boys' conglomerate concert video documentary ("Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That"), the first thing that seriously came to my mind was FLICKER'S FOURTH ANNUAL ATTACK OF THE FIFTY FOOT REELS! As described by Flicker NYC's founder & curator, David Teague, the underground cinephiles experiment in true surprise . . .
"A Special Super 8 Show!
Twenty-five filmmakers have each shot a movie on a single three minute roll of Super 8 film and turned in the roll unprocessed to Flicker with no editing, no post-production allowed! We'll screen these films, straight from the lab, for the first time in front of the Flicker audience and the filmmakers themselves." DT
Tim Reardon is participating in this event with his first stop-motion animated film. Yesterday I visited the Greenpoint studio space with my camera to find out more. If you are anything like me you might see films and completely marvel at how they were made, almost to the point of distraction. Since I had never tried stop-motion animation collage, it was a very eye-opening experience . . .
. . . I was impressed by the different figures cut-out from magazine photo-ops or downloaded from the web, some with tiny moveable limbs held together with fine wire used for making jewelry. These doll-like photos were fascinating, especially the one with Tim's beer. Meanwhile, the super-8 camera was supported by a tripod placed directly over the floor, which would later be covered with various background fabrics from blue leopard print to the American flag . . . After Tim carefully outlined the invisible frame on the floor, he created one-frame and two-frame shots of each compositional movement. I stood on a chair and helped operate the camera as he maneuvered the images on the ground, and something about the process reminded me of how Jackson Pollock painted on the floor . . .
Keep in mind that the first time anyone will see this film will be Thursday evening at the Attack of the 50-Foot Reel screening. (Some filmmakers are really brave!) I truly wonder if the Beasties already are aware . . .
